physical prototyping

function: arduino sound-servo system
prototype-frustration 3.1: arduino sound system.

prototyping a basic system. y3s2w7. completed 19 february 2024.

basic arduino sound sensor system.

like prototype: frustration, prototype: hopelessness makes use of the same sound sensors to pick up sound, then sends signals into the arduino to be used in a p5.js sketch. i used a light bulb to test if it was receiving signals.

form: responsive bunny
prototype-frustration 3.2: skeletal structure.
prototype-frustration 3.2: skeletal structure; protecting fragile parts.

skeletal structure of the prototype.

i did not want to glue a perfectly intact plushie's body parts onto the prototype. i realised i could attach clips on the prototype, so that the plushie can be removed any time. the plushie selection was quite random, but i found one with floppy ears instead of arms. the prototype would work with one with floppy arms too.

the issue with this prototype was that the bunny is too heavy for the servo motor. instead of moving the bunny, the servo moves the plastic stand, and the bunny remains still. to improve on this, i had to find a heavier stand, and figure out a way to attach the servo onto it.

prototype-frustration 3.2: heavier base structure.
prototype-frustration 3.2: successful base form of the prototype.

prototyping a basic structural form. y3s2w7. completed 19 february 2024.

base structure of the prototype.

using a little metal book divider and some foam board, i made a snug little compartment where the sound sensor could slide right in. i ensured that the compartment was attached securely to the base of the structure which was the book divider.

it works! the next stage was the make this more presentable. and the boobby pin wasn't attached very securely.

finetuning: making use of acylic
prototype-frustration 3.3: separate parts of the foam board.
prototype-frustration 3.3: clear acrylic structure.
prototype-frustration 3.3: fingerprints. :(

laser-cutting. y3s2w11. completed 22 march 2024.

last-minute laser-cutting of the prototype-frustration.

my prototype was working fine already, but i did this on a whim because my form board prototype seemed like it was falling apart. i guess it was not doing as fine as i thought....

the glue was very difficult to put on. i used what i had: loctite. after the glue dried, patches where i touched would appear, and i had used clear acrylic because i thought the look of the wire of the servo-motor looked quite awesome. it did not look as awesome with my fingerprints. i was very ashamed and did not take much pictures of this.

prototype-frustration 3.3: sanding it down, prepping for spray paint. special thanks to tania
prototype-frustration 3.3: spray!

final product shoot. taken on 15 april 2024.
